The Maldivian government has established the State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation Limited (SPMSC), a fully state-owned entity tasked with procuring and distributing medicines, medical consumables, and equipment nationwide. This move, announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, aims to resolve persistent challenges in the country’s healthcare supply chain and ensure consistent access to essential medications for all citizens.
Previously managed by the State Trading Organization (STO), the procurement and distribution of medical supplies will now fall under the purview of the SPMSC, established under Section 15 of the Companies Act (Act No. 7/2023). The government holds all shares in the new corporation.
Recent months have witnessed significant difficulties in sourcing essential medicines in the Maldives. Widespread shortages of crucial drugs, including pain relievers, treatments for chronic illnesses, and pediatric medications, have affected patients across the archipelago. These shortages stemmed from a confluence of factors. Delays in payments from the national health insurance scheme hampered importers, while price controls diminished the incentive for retailers to stock certain medications. Furthermore, restrictions on pharmaceutical importers limited the STO’s ability to effectively address supply gaps.
In response to these challenges, the STO actively sought international partnerships to enhance supply reliability and collaborated with global agencies to procure medicines at more affordable prices through established procurement systems. While these efforts provided some relief, significant public frustration persisted, with many patients continuing to report difficulties accessing necessary medications.
The creation of the SPMSC represents a direct response to these persistent supply chain issues. By centralizing procurement within a dedicated government entity, the Maldivian government aims to address long-standing weaknesses and create a more robust and reliable system for healthcare delivery. This reform is intended to guarantee the continuous and accessible provision of essential medicines throughout the Maldives.
