The Maldives will actively participate in the 60th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), held in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 11th to October 8th, 2025, advocating for human rights in the face of global challenges, particularly those impacting Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Opening remarks by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk set the stage for discussions on the global human rights situation. The Maldives’ participation will focus on several key areas, reflecting its national priorities and international commitments.

A central theme of the Maldives’ engagement will be the escalating threat of sea-level rise. The nation will introduce a new resolution specifically addressing the detrimental impacts of rising sea levels on the full and effective enjoyment of human rights by its citizens and other vulnerable populations. This proactive approach underscores the Maldives’ vulnerability to climate change and its commitment to raising global awareness of this critical issue.

Further demonstrating its dedication to proactive human rights protection, the Maldives will also table the triennial resolution on the role of prevention in the promotion and protection of human rights. This resolution emphasizes the importance of preventative measures in safeguarding human rights worldwide and preventing future violations.

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by SIDS, the Maldives will deliver a joint statement on behalf of these nations under the agenda item on Technical Assistance and Capacity-Building. This collaborative effort will highlight the specific needs and vulnerabilities of SIDS and advocate for tailored support to address these challenges effectively.

As a member of both the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Maldives will participate in collective statements expressing deep concern over the alarming global rise in human rights violations. These statements will reflect the shared concerns of these influential international bodies and call for concerted action to address these pressing issues.

Beyond its participation in collective statements, the Maldives will independently highlight the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Palestine. The nation will also actively participate in the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, contributing its perspective and expertise to these crucial discussions.

The Maldives’ participation in the HRC, a 47-member body serving as the UN’s primary forum for addressing human rights issues and violations, is a testament to its commitment to international cooperation and the protection of human rights globally. The nation’s current term on the Council will conclude in 2025.

The Maldives’ active role in the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council underscores its commitment to addressing the pressing human rights challenges of our time, particularly those exacerbated by climate change and impacting vulnerable nations. Its contributions to the discussions and resolutions will undoubtedly shape the global human rights agenda for years to come.
