The Maldives continues to reinforce its position as one of the world’s leading honeymoon destinations, with one in four international visitors travelling to the country for their honeymoon, according to the Maldives Visitor Survey 2025 released by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
The survey found that 24% of respondents visited the Maldives for their honeymoon, highlighting the continued importance of romance tourism to the destination’s visitor mix. In addition, 27% of respondents identified themselves as romantic travellers, making it the second-largest visitor segment after sun and sand relaxers, who accounted for 31% of visitors. Luxury seekers represented 12% of respondents, while 11% described themselves as adventurers or water sports enthusiasts. The findings underscore the Maldives’ enduring appeal for couples seeking romantic getaways, supported by its collection of private island resorts, overwater villas and tailored honeymoon experiences.

Across key source markets, the romantic traveller segment remained consistently strong, accounting for around 25% to 29% of respondents. Italian and Swiss visitors recorded the highest proportion at 29%, while British, German, Indian, American and French travellers also demonstrated significant demand for romance-focused holidays in the Maldives. Family holidaymakers accounted for a comparatively smaller share across most markets, reinforcing the destination’s continued strength among couples.
The survey also found that romance remains a key driver among repeat visitors. While the romantic traveller segment accounted for around 26% of first-time and mid-level repeat visitors, it increased to 32% among travellers who had visited the Maldives more than ten times, suggesting strong destination loyalty among couples returning for multiple holidays.

Accommodation preferences further reflected the importance of romance tourism. Among visitors staying exclusively at resorts, 12% identified honeymoons as one of the main experiences sought during their stay. The proportion rose to 15% among visitors combining resort and inhabited island stays, the highest across all accommodation categories, while liveaboard visitors were primarily focused on diving experiences.
The Maldives Visitor Survey 2025 highlights the continued significance of romance travel as a core pillar of the country’s tourism industry, supporting demand across the resort sector and reinforcing the Maldives’ position in the global honeymoon market.
